Discover the Beauty of Kalona
The city of Kalona is located 15 miles south of Iowa City perfectly nestled into the rolling countryside of southeastern Iowa.
The city’s rich cultural heritage dates back to the late 1830s when pioneers began immigrating from the east. The Amish, who remain an important part of the Kalona community, arrived in 1846 when Iowa gained statehood.
Kalona is now better known as the “Quilt Capitol of Iowa” boasting a plethora of stores dedicated to preserving the art of quilt making. This is apparent through over 40 quilt designs paved into the downtown streetscape. The quaint downtown center features one-of-a-kind dining options, locally-owned antique and craft shops, and longstanding service establishments.
