Support Within Our Community
Elisa Lyons, LMHC founded Iowa Family Counseling in early 2019 to help serve the children and families of rural Iowa. Growing up in rural Iowa, Elisa knew that she wanted to focus her practice on providing quality mental healthcare to the people of Iowa’s rural communities. Everyone faces challenges at some time, so she wanted to create a business that would provide resources to help children and families grow and thrive.
Iowa Family Counseling started as a solo practice centered around helping children through school-based counseling. Elisa initially only saw clients at schools and virtually, with no central office. To better serve the needs of the community, Lyons began to expand staff and look for a permanent office location in 2020. She found the perfect spot at 409 B Avenue, in the heart of downtown Kalona.
In addition to Lyons who is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, the practice is fortunate to have assembled a strong team. This team includes four additional therapists: Maddie Marshall, LISW; Latasha Cardenas LISW, LCSW; Kerstin Marnin, LMSW; and Clinton Cunningham, LBSW, LMFT. Additionally, Shelby Zahradnek serves as Administrative Assistant, and Sarah Marble is the Education and Community Outreach Director.
A variety of services are offered for clients of any age through Iowa Family Counseling in our Kalona office, via telehealth, or in a school-based setting with our partner school districts of Mid-Prairie and Highland Community Schools. The practice has therapists with extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, and families, as well as treating survivors of trauma and abuse. Therapists offer a wide variety of treatment plans for individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, anger, grief, or those struggling with the stresses associated with major life changes. When it comes to mental health, there is no such thing as a bad question and it is always ok to ask for help.
Iowa Family Counseling aims to live out its mission: Supporting children and families with genuine, empathetic, and collaborative mental healthcare across rural Iowa by being involved in the community. In addition to counseling and therapy, Iowa Family Counseling is proud to provide community outreach and mental health education services for all kinds of community organizations, schools, and companies. Iowa Family Counseling staff will collaborate with organizations to develop educational presentations and workshops that address the mental health needs of each group.
Everyone on the Iowa Family Counseling team genuinely cares about helping other people. They recognize the tremendous strength that it takes to ask for help and strive to do their best to treat each person and family the way that they would want to be treated.
